Lake Michigan Lighthouse Offering Stays You Can Win

Wouldn’t you love to wake up and look out from the deck of a lighthouse while being surrounded by a lake? The White Shoal Light offers stays, but you can win one if you’re lucky, and they’re doing it in the most interesting way.

The White Shoal Light is located 20 miles into Lake Michigan. The closest piece of land is the Mackinac Bridge, so you’ll obviously need a boat to get out there. Pack light unless you plan on arriving at the lighthouse on a yacht.

A visit to The White Shoal Light website shows how beautiful it is. The view is great, and the accommodations are just as nice. I didn’t do a deep dive into what all is offered, whether there’s food out there already for you or a staff that will be there if you need something. But you can find that out for yourself if you’d like.

That’s the view you can wake up to every morning and enjoy all day. By the way, you can go there now and stay if you want. They have stays that they offer that you can pay for if you’re interested and can’t wait to find out if you’re a winner.

Imagine waking up on Deck 6 in what they call the Queen Room. After a good night’s sleep, it’s time to take a walk and explore the lighthouse. I would be all over it, every inch of the place. I might even take a swim and see how the water feels.

This is the galley on Deck 2, where it looks like you can make your own food. If you don’t know how to cook, it’s a good time to learn. They look like they’re making grilled cheese sandwiches, and that’s easy enough. I’m not sure, but I would be willing to believe that pots and pans are already there.

But to get a stay for free, you have to be one of the lucky recipients of a neat little bottle that has the invitations inside. They are putting four of these keepsake bottles into Lake Michigan, each with a message. If you are lucky enough to find one, you get to stay for free.

Each of the four messages in bottles, which were dropped into the Mackinac Straits, contains a message from one of four descendants of longtime lightkeeper George Keller. The messages feature various offers for a free stay for one, two or up to five people.

The message in a bottle contest pays tribute to the Armistice Day Blizzard of November 1940, in which Keller and a colleague threw a message in a bottle into the water in case they did not survive the storm.

The men survived the storm, and their message was found a few weeks later by fisherman near Gros Cap, Mich.

It’s a phenomenal story of survival and a great event that you can enjoy if you are lucky enough to find one of those bottles. Even if you don’t, look up the packages that they have and get out there. It’s definitely a neat experience that may not be on your bucket list but should be.
