The Searing Tragedy Of A Startling African Safari Court Case

African Safari

Lisa and Craig Manders went on an African Safari and one of them didn’t come back. Now, Craig is trying to sue the company and has a lot of people scratching their heads wondering how far he thinks he’s going to get with that.

The happy couple was from New Jersey where the only thing wild is kept in a zoo. They booked a trip with African Portfolio, a Connecticut-based company, to go to Zambia in June of last year. The lawsuit that Craig has just filed in early February reports that the couple were among other guests who were on a guided walk portion of the tour when a hippopotamus charged Lisa and crushed her head and body in its huge jaws.

Paul Slager is the attorney representing Craig Manders, “We’re doing this because this should never have happened. There are basic safety standards that businesses are expected to follow, and that includes people in the safari tour industry. And those were not followed, and the consequences here were absolutely devastating.”

I can’t help but think that for an African Safari, the guests would have had to sign a waiver or enter into some kind of agreement before they went. That means that they are aware of the dangers out there in the wild. In fact, the trip wouldn’t be extravagant enough for a couple from New Jersey to want to go if there wasn’t something special about it. The bad part is that what makes it special is also the very thing that could end your life.

I feel for Craig. I really do. I just don’t know what more he expects from the tour guides. If he thought they were going to stop a charging hippo, he’s wrong. If he thought they were going to reach into that hippo’s mouth and pull her out alive, he’s wrong again. If he thought they were going to shoot an animal that is only doing what beasts in the wild do, guess what?

But the thing about it is, he’s suing African Portfolio. The only thing they had to do with it was book all the components of their trip to Zambia. Chiawa Safaris was the company that set up the African Safari and the same arguments apply. There is only so much tour guides can do when you are on a tour through one of the most dangerous places on earth.

Chiawa Safaris offers a guided tour where you can get so close to the wildlife, that you can reach out and touch it. Just don’t be surprised if you lose your hand! If you want basic safety standards, stay out of the wild beast’s yard. If you want to see what happens when you visit the wild, this is what happens when you visit the wild…
