The hilarious skit series from Saturday Night Live called Please Don’t Destroy has been getting raving reviews since it caught the fans’ eyes when it started in 2017. Canceling it now at the height of its briliance would be a colossal tragedy that Lorne Michaels wouldn’t want on his conscience.
Ben Marshall, John Higgins, and Martin Herlihy founded the Please Don’t Destroy comedy group in 2017 and created a successful YouTube channel full of highly entertaining video sketches. Their growing fanbase was also treated to their riotous performances at the New York Comedy Festival. It was a different sort of comedy that attracted all the fans. Their stuff was actually funny.
In 2021, the group landed SNL so that the waning comedy show could take credit for the pure genius that Please Don’t Destroy was able to bring to the table. Right out of the gate, they started with a biographical piece that starred Taylor Swift and Pete Davidson. “Three Sad Virgins” would go down in history as a courageous testimony of the suffering that Ben, John, and Martin have had to endure due to their lack of sex.
That was the making of history. They couldn’t believe Taylor Swift agreed to do the video, and Pete Davidson worked for SNL at the time. So, he had nothing better to do. It was reported that Kanye West did not watch the show that evening, and he hasn’t been available for comment since to see if he has been able to catch it on YouTube.
While SNL was enjoying the shift in popularity as fans were coming back to the show, the comedy trio was taking on bigger and more complex roles. On any given day, celebrities from all walks of life were popping into the office to visit the group at work. The famous traffic was definitely a huge bump for SNL’s street cred.
Because Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney have such a ferocious rivalry, it wasn’t long before the Madame Web star came calling. No. Not Dakota. She already did a skit with them. No. Not Emma Roberts either. The other Madame Web star, Sydney Sweeney!
Of course, it was time for the guys to step up their game. The fans were calling for them to break out of the stereotype and take on more meaningful roles. So, they wrote a morbid scene about death, and Sydney played her part perfectly. Chef Boyardee even got involved and played a supporting role.
As if the fans had collectively dreamed of this moment, Jon Hamm would enter the Please Don’t Destroy universe. Only he would change everything forever. He refused to do a simple skit in the office with dialog written by the team. He wanted more.
The staff at SNL worked day and night to create a set that looked like it came out of an episode of Mad Men, the scene in Season Six when Don Draper gets arrested for fighting with a preacher. Only this scene would bring the local police and the FBI together to find a missing girl, which is something they’ve all heard about doing at some time in their lives.
Drawing from the vast experience in that room, they pulled off an amazing pizza party regardless of the fact that they had nothing but Hawaiian pizza to work with. Whether or not they found the missing dog is anyone’s guess. I’m sure they tried their best.
Now, why would Lorne Michaels want to take that away from the fans of SNL? It would be a disaster to end the careers of those three struggling comedians before they really even got a chance to taste the glory of their fame. Please don’t destroy Please Don’t Destroy!
