When an old man wakes up on a particularly bad day, not only does the man who owes him money refuse to pay him, but requires him to do something else in order to finally get his money. That’s how Lake George starts and the next turn the Hulu comedy takes starts it on an unexpected hilarious path.
Starring Carrie Coon as Phyllis and Shea Whigham as Don, she gets the drop on him at first but he finds a way to catch her. He puts ties on her hands and puts her in the back seat to take her to her final destination. She goes through the normal human emotions. First, she’s mad. Then, she’s nice. Then, she pleads and makes offers. Then, she gets mad again.
He tries to block her out, but he hears everything she’s saying. When they arrive at the destination in a secluded spot where the disposal of a body should be relatively easy, he lifts up his pistol and she starts crying. No one wants to make a lady cry, especially not one like Phyllis. She comes across as so pure and innocent, but the fact is Don doesn’t know anything about her. All he knows is that he can’t pull the trigger.

That’s when the Hulu hit takes on a new hilarious tone. Phyllis becomes the planner and the doer, the one who makes things happen. It’s like she’s teaching Don how to be a bad guy. He just doesn’t have the stomach for it. That’s when we start to wonder how in the world he got mixed up with Armen in the first place, which happens to be Phyllis’ ex. He loves her, but he wants her gone. That’s a whole different part of the story.
So, she decides to rob Armen of all the money she knows how to find and then split so that he thinks she’s dead. What could go wrong? In her very influential way, she talks Don into it. He didn’t have the stomach to kill her, so he might as well go along with Plan B.

Back to the question, though, what’s it all about? Why does Armen owe him money? What did he do for him? Obviously, it wasn’t killing people. Don’t expect spoilers from me, but it is one hilarious ride watching a total switch happen where she takes control and he learns from her how to get things done.
