Have you ever been so invested in one of the TV shows you were watching when all of a sudden they decided to kill off the main character, or a beloved character? What is the thinking there? When did the big heads in Hollywood ever think that was a good idea?
Whether it’s a hero or a villain, they’re why you were watching in the first place. What will the show be like without them? But the main question is, will you keep watching?
That’s the real risk these makers of TV shows take is losing loyal viewers. There has to be something really phenomenal to take their place, which often means that the new character was introduced to the show and built up their own following. That following will have to be enough to keep the viewers who would otherwise threaten to leave.
Of course, change is inevitable. NCIS didn’t kill off Gibbs but sending him home to go fishing had the same impact. It’s just that there were other characters who had been built up, good characters that kept the show going. Plus, a spinoff helps sometimes. NCIS: Origins takes fans back to the start when Gibbs was a rookie and Mike Franks was well on his way to becoming legendary.
So, this obviously isn’t about NCIS because this is about deaths in our favorite TV shows. The thing about it is Hollywood does know what it’s doing. Even though the commercials and the trailers are letting fans know that something ugly is about to come, they keep everyone watching. Then, they handle the scene like a poetic eulogy. They make sure you shed some tears because it is their moment to shine.
Not the character’s moment. No, the character is dying. It’s the director’s time to shine. It’s how they handle the death and all the circumstances around it. They might do flashbacks or dream sequences. They love using slow motion. Oh, and the music has to be perfect. That’s one way to get to the heart is through the music.
